Rolling Stone ranks Hendrix as the greatest guitarist of all time. Nearly every rock, blues, funk, and metal guitarist since has borrowed from him.
Hendrix's 1967 Monterey Pop Festival performance, which ended with him setting his guitar on fire, announced a new era. His Woodstock performance in 1969, particularly his rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," remains one of the defining moments in American music history. He died in London in September 1970 at age 27.

Their first three albums, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality, laid down the blueprint metal still follows.
Iommi's down-tuned guitar riffs, Butler's literary lyrics, and Osbourne's wailing vocals created a sound that Rolling Stone once dismissed and history eventually declared essential. Black Sabbath was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and played their final concert at Villa Park in Birmingham in July 2025.
